Hospitality & Tourism Industry has its roots in our ancient literature wherein we have heard stories about pilgrims and traders who used to stay at a facility for a brief span and continue their journey thereafter. We even find ruins of such temporary accommodations throughout our country. Many pious kings commissioned ‘Dharmashalas’ to help travellers in their journeys. This laid the foundation of the Hospitality & Tourism Industry in our country. Over the period this industry underwent tremendous changes and transformed into a sophisticated business trade.
In India, we believe in अतिथिदेवो भव, which means ‘Guest is equivalent to God.’ India has a long-standing tradition of respecting and caring for the guests. Thus sowing the seeds of the blooming Hospitality Industry. Likewise, the Tourism Industry is also a potential sector with a plethora of opportunities.

One of the largest service sectors in India, tourism was worth $ 234 bn in 2018 generating more than 42 million jobs. In other words, this sector comprises 9.2 % of India’s GDP and provides 8.1% of total employment.
Scope: According to the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), the Hospitality and Tourism Industry in India will grow exponentially with an annual rate of 6.9% by 2028. It will be worth $ 460 bn which will be 9.9% of the country’s GDP.
The Government of India is keen on developing this industry because of its potential in providing livelihood to a large section of the population. PM Narendra Modi, in his Independence Day speech on 15th August 2020, has urged the countrymen to visit 15 domestic destinations by 2022 to give the tourism industry a boost. Along with it, efforts are made to attract foreigners and thus enhance this sector.
Along with recreational and religious tourism, India has a huge potential for Medical Tourism. We have the excellent medical infrastructure, proficient healthcare professionals and quality nursing facilities. In addition, our traditional healthcare therapies have great regards throughout the world and people tend to visit India for such alternate therapies.
This opens a number of opportunities in the Hospitality sector. It is thus the best time for students to enter this field has become a part of the success story.
Hospitality & Tourism is a booming industry.
